EACC ARRESTS FORMER TREASURY CS AND MARSABIT GOVERNOR OVER SH 8 BILLION GRAFT

The two were arrested on Wednesday morning and their residences searched for crucial documentary evidence before they were driven to Integrity Centre for interrogation on alleged of graft accusations.

Former Treasury cabinet secretary Ukur Yattani and the Marsabit Governor Ali Mohamud Mohamed were yesterday evening released from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) custody after day long interrogation.

The two were arrested on Wednesday morning and their residences searched for crucial documentary evidence before they were driven to Integrity Centre for interrogation on alleged of graft accusations.

The arrests happened after EACC detectives conducted raids the former CS’s homes and those of Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali in Nairobi and Marsabit.

The two are being investigated over alleged embezzlement of Ksh.8 billion of public funds allegedly mismanaged from Marsabit in the period 2014-2024.

The two were arrested alongside nine other former and current Marsabit county officials.

Yattani served as Marsabit Governor between 2013 to 2017 and was appointed CS by Former President Uhuru Kenyatta after losing the gubernatorial to Governor Mohamud.

Ali on the other hand is serving his second term as Marsabit governor.

The EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed that the anti-graft detectives successfully conducted operations at the properties of the two suspects.

“All the suspects have been granted conditional release to report back to EACC Offices in one week to facilitate the ongoing investigation.The Commission will continue to conduct its investigations independently, impartially, and professionally, and in accordance with its mandate as spelt under the law,” Ngumbi said.

The Commission revealed the two leaders were arrested alongside other nine suspects.

“As part of the investigations, today, the Commission conducted successful investigative operations at properties belonging to the sitting Governor for Marsabit County Government Ali Mohamud Mohamed and former County Governor Ukur Yattani located in Nairobi and Marsabit town and obtained valuable evidence that will bolster the ongoing investigations. The operations were pursuant to court orders,” Ngumbi revealed.

EACC is investigating allegations of corruption,economic crimes, conflict of interest, embezzlement of public funds and abuse of office amounting to more than Sh8 billion against officials of Marsabit.

Yattani served as Marsabit Governor between 2013 to 2017 and was appointed CS by Former President Uhuru Kenyatta after losing the gubernatorial to Governor Mohamud.
